Our Program

Our Program

Tennova Health – Knoxville’s Internal Medicine Residency Program is a community-based program with Initial Accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME ID: 1404700003).

We are currently accepting applications via ERAS for our inaugural class of thirteen PGY-1 residents to start on July 1, 2024. Once our program is fully built, we will have a full complement of 39 residents in the program.

Tennova Health is excited to transition to an robust community-based teaching hospital system. Our network consists of two hospitals, North Knoxville Medical Center and Turkey Creek Medical Center, as well as free standing emergency departments, urgent care centers and a strong ambulatory network of primary care and subspecialists.

Additionally, our partnership with Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) expands our academic offerings to state-of-the-art simulation centers, virtual and in-person library access and classroom options. Together, Tennova Health and LMU-DCOM provide a solid clinical and educational work environment for the next generation of leaders in Medicine.

Residents receive firsthand experience with a wealth of patient care opportunities and a diverse patient population through an innovative approach to internal medicine residency training that balances education, training and resident well-being.

All of us at Tennova Health look forward to the addition of the next generation of resident physicians within our community teaching hospital system. Our leadership is committed to fostering dynamic learning environments, and our diverse allopathic and osteopathic faculty, with extensive medical education experience, are ready to guide you on your career path.

An active educational experience and the opportunity to explore your career interests is yours at Tennova Health.

Academics

Tennova Health – Knoxville’s Internal Medicine Residency Program provides learners with a structured academic foundation rich with patient care diversity, subspecialty exposure and research opportunities. The learning environment is one of respect and support between learners, staff, faculty and leadership. The didactic lecture series is structured as a protected and dedicated weekly academic half-day.

Case presentations are held in a relaxed environment allowing for group discussion of clinical cases with a multidisciplinary approach. Cases are broken down to help learners formulate assessments and care plans on complex patients. Sub-specialists join discussions to add their clinical knowledge to the case.

While in-person participation will be required for most, sessions will be offered virtually as well. Sessions will also be recorded and the material available online so those absent can review from anywhere, at any time.

Curriculum

Our program is structured as a 4+1 scheduling model so that all residents have four weeks of a dedicated clinical and educational rotation experience prior to spending one week in the continuity clinic. All required rotations are four weeks in duration. We believe this scheduling model produces strong results in terms of our residents and faculty developing longitudinal relationships, enabling excellent long-term assessments of resident development and growth.

Inpatient rotations occur in a multidisciplinary environment. By design, patients in our hospitals are cared for by interprofessional teams. Nursing, support staff, pharmacy, social work, case management, residents and LMU-DCOM medical students will work with the supervising physician faculty to provide high-quality coordinated care to the patients we serve. During the course of training, residents will grow from team members to leaders, assuming responsibility for both patient outcomes and the quality of care delivered to our community.

The continuity clinic experience for the first year is located on North Knoxville Medical Center campus. Residents can take a quick drive or a nice 10-minute walk between the hospital campus and the continuity clinic. A new state-of-the-art continuity clinic will be adjacent and attached by a sky bridge to North Knoxville Medical Center and is scheduled to open in early 2025.
