Richard Lee, M.D., M.A., MBA – Core Faculty

A native Knoxvillian, Dr. Lee has practiced community Medical Oncology for thirty years, splitting time equally between the urban Knoxville community and outreach clinics in rural Appalachian communities. His passion is providing high-quality, up-to-date care to people with malignancies and blood disorders, especially in underserved populations. Dr. Lee enjoys academic environments and clinical education activities and has taught second and fourth year medical students since the founding of Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk School of Osteopathic Medicine. He previously served as chief of staff of the former Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. Dr. Lee currently directs the laboratory at Tennessee Cancer Specialists and acts as chairperson for the finance committee at his church.

Dr. Lee completed undergraduate studies at University of Tennessee – Knoxville, medical school at University of Tennessee – Memphis, internal medicine residency at University of Alabama – Birmingham, and his hematology & medical oncology fellowships at the University of Florida – Gainesville. Following these studies, he continued his education after years of practice with a masters degree in business from University of Tennessee and a master of biomedical laboratory science from Michigan State University.

Outside of clinical practice and academia, Dr. Lee enjoys bicycling with his wife and is the proud father of two daughters, one an internal medicine resident at University of Florida – Gainesville and the other an oncology nurse/PhD candidate at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Lee strongly supports the founding of the Tennova Health – Knoxville Internal Medicine residency program and looks forward to interactions with colleagues at all levels of training.
