Training Locations

Tennova Health is a regional health system affiliated with Community Health Systems. It is comprised of seven hospitals spread across the state of Tennessee. Our program is centrally located in the Greater Knoxville area at North Knoxville Medical Center with supplemental and contrasting educational experiences available at neighboring sister hospital, Turkey Creek Medical Center. The program’s aim is to train future physicians who are committed to serving the health and wellness needs of communities within the Appalachian region and beyond.

We will achieve this goal by offering our residents opportunities to train in the following settings:

  1. Our primary training location is a full-service acute care hospital, providing an in-depth emergent, inpatient and critical care training experience in the community setting. This location is supported by a broad range of medical specialists and is situated on a large campus inclusive of multiple ambulatory and specialty practices. We offer the latest in technological resources and strive for efficient, effective patient care.

  2. The North Knoxville Medical Center medical staff faculty and affiliated physician practices offer strong learning and mentoring opportunities in the private, community based practice setting. Our residents will learn what is required to provide excellent patient centered care and achieve success in ambulatory practice in a variety of specialties.

  3. The Turkey Creek Medical Center will provide our residents with access to high quality cardiac, ambulatory surgical and other premium elective experiences in a modern, outpatient-care focused setting.

  4. Our affiliated medical school offers extensive faculty development support and simulation opportunities, along with access to both library resources and frequent educational conferences and collaborative learning.

  5. Our patient base consists of urban Knoxville and its suburbs, as well as an abundance of rural settings such as southern Appalachia Kentucky, north central Tennessee and southwestern Virginia. Our patient mix is diverse, with significant numbers of insured, uninsured and Medicare patients.

Our Primary Training Locations

North Knoxville Medical Center

North Knoxville Medical Center is an acute care hospital located just north of Knoxville, Tennessee. This location offers private patient rooms with dedicated family areas. In addition, the hospital has technologically advanced information and communications systems, decentralized nursing stations for better efficiency and patient care and noise-reduction materials to provide patients with a more comfortable experience.

Knoxville is Tennessee’s third largest metropolitan area. The Knoxville metro population is nearly 900,000 and is broadly dispersed across the demographic spectrum. North Knoxville Medical Center will serve as the primary clinical site with most rotations, lectures and other educational experiences occurring at this location. All inpatient clinical experiences will occur within the North Knoxville hospital, and outpatient rotations will take place in the many physician practices situated on the hospital campus. The location has nearly 200 patient care beds, 33 ICU beds and operates with an average daily census of over 160 patients.

Our patient volume and acuity will provide an excellent basis in training for our residents and many members of our medical staff will serve as program faculty. Hospital leadership is committed to providing all resources necessary for a successful program, including conference rooms, lounges, food, safe and secure call rooms, simulation experiences and access to a virtual library. Many members of the medical staff currently have academic appointments and serve as educators and preceptors for medical students from Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine and are enthusiastic to take the next step as teaching faculty for our planned residency program.
